Halloween, a comet, and the question of cosmic intelligence — what could go wrong?

As the comet 3I/ATLAS races past Earth this October, hosts PHred (Fred McMurray) and Barbara Wainwright gather a panel of scientific thinkers, technologists, and truth-seekers to ask one haunting question: Is something following it?

The episode opens with PHred’s classic mix of humor and curiosity: “If this thing swings by Chicago on Halloween, I’ll be out there protecting my grandkids — and maybe the planet.” Barbara laughs, but quickly brings balance, pointing out how humanity’s fascination with the unknown “keeps us curious, creative, and a little scared — and that’s a good thing.”

Enter the panel. Deanna Brakefield, an expert in human behavior, grounds the discussion: “Halloween is when imagination meets anxiety. When we can’t explain something, we turn it into a story.” That story, this time, is a fiery rock from the edge of the solar system — and a film reference to Stephen King’s Maximum Overdrive, where machines turn against humanity after a comet passes overhead.

Professor Jim Treleaven dives into the data, linking the mythos to modern AI. “In 2018, people hesitated to talk about AI in business. Now, it’s everywhere. What if the real ‘alien invasion’ is already inside our systems — algorithms evolving faster than we can track?”

Tor Arne Jorgensen, a technologist with a keen sense of irony, adds: “Maybe we’ve already merged with the machines. If the lights start blinking on Halloween night, don’t blame ET — blame the code.”

By the end, the laughter turns thoughtful. The “alien invasion” might not come from the stars, but from how we interpret what’s around us — comets, computers, and our own imagination. As Barbara sums it up: “Whether it’s AI, ATLAS, or October chills — it’s all a mirror. What we see depends on how brave we are to look.”

So, will there be a Halloween alien invasion? Maybe not from space — but from our screens, our fears, and the stories we tell.
