Deanna Brakefield: My Story
How Neurodivergent News was Born
In the Beginning:
Growing up I was often labeled….Gifted but damaged. At 7 they decided I was ADHD and nearly every teacher wrote me off from that point on. But, through hard work, I made it through college and met the man that would shape the course of my life. That special man’s unwavering support became my strength. We later married, and began our family.
The Family:
My husband brought a son to our marriage, we added three more to the mix, and before our last child was born we adopted 3. If you were keeping count, thats 7 kids. Now heres the kicker, 6 of my 7 beautiful children are neurodiverse, across the spectrum. And my strong man….he has what we use to call Aspergers. So, of a family of 9, 8 are neurodiverse.
My strong man and I made a choice for our family early on that one of us would always be home for our children and I chose to be the one. The reality of raising an ever growing family was stressful to someone who craves structure. And the individual needs of our sweet kids were each unique.
The Change:
In 2022, I realized that Jeremy’s job, though demanding, wasn’t offering us the long-term security we needed. That’s when I started my own marketing agency, focusing on an often-overlooked community: mental health providers, holistic healers, and alternative medicine practitioners.
This community holds a special place in my heart because of the make up of my family. Finding the right resources for our family has been a constant challenge. From practices taught to the providers themselves to insurance and scarcity of services and IEP’s. We have fought the good fight, like many of you.
The Result:
That’s why I launched Neurodivergent News—a resource for those who help, support, or are neurodivergent. In an age where people are searching for resources online and on the radio it has never been easier to bring together communities.
